5 Less Known Signs of Depression
You may have found a bunch of your family members or friends or your colleagues at office telling you that they are depressed. While in actuality they simply mean that they are sad. Sadness and depression are not as same mental states as they are used synonymously by the novel-reading-geek kind of people today. You should be able to differentiate a depressed state of mind from other unpleasant conditions because sadness, grief or nostalgia is widely confused with it. People mistakenly seem to mix all the conditions together. And of course, there are proper signs of depression in an individual that indicate the illness and require an optimum treatment plan.
Depression is one of the most common treatable psychiatric illnesses. According to the fact sheet of World Health Organisation reviewed in April this year (2016), approximately 350 million people worldwide belonging to all ages suffer from depression each year. More women and fewer men become the victim of depression, WHO adds.
What actually is depression…?
Depression may be described as a set of pessimistic feelings emerging one after another for each and every phenomenon occurring beside you. You are SAD (with capital letters). And you don’t know how to overcome this SADNESS. That half-filled glass of juice kept on your bedside table is no more half-filled. It seems half-empty instead. You are facing an extreme fatigue whole day.

You think nothing except preferring to stay alone… because… your beloved dog is exceedingly irritating now. That cute furry cat is no more of your interest. And it is all happening because of you. You should leave your home and start living in a distant deserted land or, perhaps, in a jungle. Because things are going all the way round, and you have no idea how to cope with this situation.
Now, I will be explaining the signs that are not commonly taken as signs of depression. Some are really hard to believe and even funny. Here we go.
Internet Addiction is One of The Signs of Depression
Really…? Yes. You are more likely to abandon the real world and want to neglect each and every thing beside you. You are no longer interested in meeting your friends living near your house. Or your uncle who has come to congratulate you for your good results in the examination without having the expected expressions of excitement on your face. But, you simply are not a nerd. You are depressed.
A team of British scientists in a study found that excessive use of internet has a clear link with depression. It was although, not clear whether depression causes Internet Addiction or Internet Addiction causes depression. (1)
A more recent study done on university students found that Internet Addiction often coexists with other psychological problems such as anxiety, insomnia, depression and so on. (2)
Your Pain Thresholds Have Lowered Down
Either it is a pain in your back, neck or it is a headache. You simply feel it stronger than ever before. The pain endurance in your body is decreased and you are literally surprised why it is happening to you. You are probably suffering from depression.

Like Internet Addiction, there is a link between pain and depression. Your brain reacts to pains more strongly when you are depressed. And therefore the less you are able to manage pains, the more the chances of depression. (3, 4, 5)
You are Gaining Some Extra Pounds
You probably didn’t know this one. Weight loss has long been considered as one of the signs of depression, and it is known to decrease your appetite, causing you to lose weight unexpectedly.

But recent sets of studies support the idea that unexpected weight gain can also be one of the signs of depression. While researchers are still trying to understand a proper mechanism of how this shift from weight loss to weight to weight gain is originated. (6)
You have Stopped Brushing Your Teeth
People with depression tend to isolate themselves. Their looks are no more important to them. They don’t care how they actually seem to be. You may at times find their shoes left unpolished for several weeks. A wrinkled pair of pants and a creepy stretched t-shirt making them look as nerdy as heck.
This happens because of the feeling of intense guilt inside depressive people’s mind and thereby they actively neglect every normal, healthy and fashionable activity that a normal person takes part in.
You are Unable to Choose the Right Place for Dinner
This is the final and the most bizarre sign. Making decisions is a great conscious activity of our brain. And when you are depressed, you simply lose this ability.
There are also other aspects of decision-making ability. Once you are depressed, you are prone to make abnormally wrong decisions and cause yourself more harm through your depressed decisions. (7)
